The band’s history dates back to 1994, when high school classmates Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick formed an alternative rock band called Kara's Flowers. After releasing an unsuccessful debut album, the band went on hiatus, attended college, and soaked in new musical influences like R&B, soul, and hip-hop. In 2001, they re-emerged with a new musical direction, added guitarist James Valentine to the lineup, and officially renamed themselves Maroon 5.
